Phoenix Comic-Con
Just finished up the exclusive print that I’ll be making available at the Phoenix Comic-con this weekend.
I’m going to be sharing booth 422 with master of cute, Greg Ham. I’m also finally going to make prints of my two favorite Aang paintings:
So if you’re going to be in the Phoenix area, make sure to drop by and say hi.
Artcast #8 Green Monk Print
I continued the work form last week, designing and painting an exclusive Green Monk print for the upcoming MoCCA festival. We also had a visit from fellow concept artist Xavier Garcia and had a chance to talk about art, comics and all sorts of stuff.
Here’s the beginning sketch followed by the in-progress painting. Still much work to do to figure this thing out.
Stuff mentioned in the show:
The Visual Story, Second Edition: Creating the Visual Structure of Film, TV and Digital Media
The Color is Green
What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day then dropping the price of Green Monk to 2.99? If you’ve been thinking of getting a copy, now’s the time to do it. The only other place you’ll get a copy at this price is directly from me at a convention.
The price only lasts through this weekend, so don’t wait!
Rainmagic
Here are the pencils for the first two pages of Rainmagic, the short I’m working on for the Sunstone comics anthology.
I’m trying to get accustomed to this larger format. As you can see it would be nice if I had a large format scanner. I also have totally obviated the usefulness of my blue line paper by using red pencil on page 2 (but I got it so I got to find some way to get rid of it). After working on Green Monk, I totally prefer using Borden and Riley Bleedproof paper . It’s cheaper, and I like the surface better. I’ll start working with it once I get rid of all of my old Bristol.
You can also tell that I re-worked the face about 5 times. Bristol is not so forgiving of so much indecision. I finally got wise and made this style sheet for the girl’s face.
Overall, I’m liking where this is going. You can see some video of me working on page 2 below (before my camera malfunction). I can’t wait to ink this stuff.
Party Time

I’ve got a very special message for SLC locals: “It’s Party Time.”
Black Cat Comics, the premiere comics retailer in Utah, is going to be hosting a Green Monk Release Party, and you are invited.
when? October, 24th 2009 12 noon +
where? Black Cat Comics 2261 Suite A, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106
map? Yes:
why? If you buy Green Monk at the party you can still get a custom brush sketch as explained here. Plus, I’ll be offering a discount on Green Monk with the purchase of any comic at Black Cat.
So, come hang out, chat about comics and help me celebrate Green Monk.
Inktober #1
I’m a bit late to the game, but I thought I’d join in Jake Parker’s Inktober experience. Especially now that Green Monk is off to the printers, I no longer have an excuse to not. Here’s today inkperience:

It Has Begun…
Just started laying text into Green Monk tonight. I Can’t tell you how exciting it is to start seeing this stuff come together. Here’s a little sneak peek.

On another note, I was going to lay out this book in InDesign, but after considering the cost of InDesign and the infrequency with which I would use it, I decided to look at other options.
Fortunately I stumbled upon Scribus. It’s a no-frills, open source layout tool. It’s not as slick as InDesign, but so far it looks like it’s getting the job done without any real annoyances. And I didn’t pay one red cent for it.
Maybe I’ll make a donation…
Brushamania
Well, post-production on Green Monk has been moving along. I should have some new frames I’ve added to show in the next couple of days. Till then here’s little fooling around with the brush pen while in Japan:
Some witch-head sketches for Green Monk.

Monster heads that may or may not be related to a future project:
